Art While Black

When I got to university, I had a portfolio review with the chair of the Art Department to qualify for the advanced studies curriculum in a combined physics and art major. I laid my paintings on the floor and waited while the professor slowly walked around my drawings and paintings with a sort of puzzled scowl on his face. “What part of these did you do? Is this your work? I didn’t know you people could draw like this.”

A few years later, I was invited to take part in a group show with the downtown council featuring prominent landscape painters, and my former professor happened to be one of the other featured artists. He didn’t recognize me after three years in his class.
