Educating While Black

Terrence Deshon
Dean of Students

While at a community meeting, we did an introduction. We were to mention the following: name, occupation, and one thing you are grateful for. Lawyer, teacher, musician, corrections officer, nurse, librarian, server, artist, etc. None of those occupations was met with surprise.

When I mentioned that I am the Dean of a middle school, eyebrows raised, mouths dropped, and the questions began. “How old are you? Wait, what school? Wow, how long have you been in that role?” Being Black and in a position of power shouldn’t be a surprise. One day, eyebrows won’t be raised when I introduce myself.
